Located midway down the western coast of France, La Rochelle is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Poitou-Charantes region.  Famed for it's stunning Vieux Port (Old Harbour) and Old Town, La Rochelle is also the gateway to the Île d'Aix, Île de Ré and Fort Boyard regions.  La Rochelle's Old Harbour has three famous guard towers, Tour de la Chaine, Tour de la Lanterne and Tour St. Nicolas, which are well worth visiting, as is the wealthy Port des Minimes, home to a large number of yachts and expensive boats.  Île d'Aix is famed for being the hideaway of Napoleon Bonaparte before his surrender to the HMS Bellerophon, whilst nearby Île de Ré is still scattered with the remains of German bunkers installed during their occupation of the island in World War II.  Connected to the A10/E05 motorway by the E602 road, La Rochelle is in easy driving distance of Niort, La Roche-sur-Yon and Poitiers.  The surrounding Poitou-Charantes region is regarded as being the home of the famous French drink cognac, and tastings are possible at the local distilleries.
